The Fisher & Paykel FlexiTrunk Infant Nasal Mask is a single-patient, disposable silicone interface worn over the nose of a neonate or infant receiving Bubble CPAP therapy in the NICU. Its clinical role is to form a low-leak seal between the pressurised gas circuit and the patient's nasal airway — delivering continuous positive airway pressure to the infant's lungs to maintain alveolar recruitment, reduce apnoea episodes, and support respiratory work in spontaneously breathing premature and term neonates.
The mask sits over the nostrils and nasal bridge — it does not insert into the nares. It connects directly to the FlexiTrunk nasal tubing assembly (BC190 / BC191 / BC192 series) and is secured in position by the infant's bonnet (BC300–BC309 series) or headgear (BC325–BC331 series). All components are part of the integrated F&P FlexiTrunk CPAP Interface system, engineered to work together.
In clinical practice, the nasal mask is rotated with nasal prongs during CPAP therapy — typically alternated every 2 to 4 hours — to rest the nasal septum, columella, and surrounding skin from the pressure of prong contact. This rotation strategy allows uninterrupted CPAP delivery while protecting fragile neonatal nasal tissue from breakdown. The mask can also be used as the sole primary interface in infants where nasal prong sizing is difficult or prong tolerance is poor.
